HBO paints clear picture of Pacquiao’s distractions in ‘24/7’ premiere

Antonio Margarito isn’t letting his guard down much, but HBO has penetrated the defenses of Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach in this week’s premiere of its “24/7” buildup to the Nov. 13 Pacquiao-Margarito bout in Texas.

Trainer Roach, for example, doesn’t fight the mob that surrounds him at a mall in Baguio -- a passel of schoolgirls from the Justin Bieber demographic. This demonstration of Roach’s popularity in the Philippines is not the core of the episode, but Roach’s sweet reaction to that flattering attention is symbolic of what we see happening to Pacquiao.

Pacquiao, Rangers and Cowboys all fighting for DFW's hearts and wallets

I don't know how many, but there were a bunch of Filipino nationals in Arlington last March to see Manny Pacquiao fight Joshua Clottey at Cowboys (football) Stadium.

Pacquiao Watch: When shorter is stronger

No. This is not about Manny Pacquiao’s height or lack of it against Antonio Margarito.

Over the years, Manny has been known for his lunging combinations anchored on powerful left straights. Of late, however, Coach Freddie Roach has successfully developed Manny into a two-fisted monster with a stinging right hook that in itself is a lethal weapon while also serving as a set-up punch.

As Manny grows and ages like wine, he will lose a step or two and his speed won’t be like it was when he was at the featherweight classes. Manny is no longer the quicksilver that he was when he was running circles against the likes of the Ledwabas, Barreras and Moraleses. He is now more deliberate with his punches. The reason why few are noticing his declining is speed is he is matched up against bigger and naturally “lumbering foes.” Well, slow by the standards of his foes some three or five years ago.

Margarito can't beat Pacquiao

Only Manny Pacquiao can beat Manny Pacquiao. Antonio Margarito is definitely setting himself up for success by training harder than he ever has his entire life, but if Pacquiao is to fall on November 13, a lot of it would be because of is own doing- or undoing if you really want to be specific.

Pacquiao fans are anxious; some pretty nervous. Reports are that their idol is somewhat cramming. Tied and pulled in several different directions with his newfound responsibilities as a Congressman on top of his other commitments being one of the biggest national sports heroes wherever in the world, 'The Pac Man' has been training like a compromised man.

What are Manny Pacquiao's Options if he Loses to Margarito?

Years ago, being undefeated was a sign of prestige in the boxing world because it was so hard to achieve. Rocky Marciano more or less set the standard when he retired as heavyweight champion with a 49-0 record. Joe Calzaghe of Wales managed to pull it off by retiring at 46-0 and Floyd Mayweather, 41-0, may also do it if he doesn’t fight again.

But it’s very hard to make it through a boxing career these days without suffering at least one defeat. When the "invincible" Muhammad Ali was finally beaten, by Joe Frazier back in 1971, millions of fans around the world were devastated. But in the end, all of the greats lost once or twice, including Alexis Arguello, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Wilfredo Benitez, Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, and the Klitschko brothers.

Antonio Margaito Stikes a Very Odd Deal for His Manny Pacquiao Fight Next Month

Margaito got caught with plaster underneath his glove right before his 2009 bout with Sugar Shane Mosley, and this has not made him the most popular fighter to sponsor, according to the LA Times.

With this in mind, Margaito offered up a deal they apparently couldn't refuse. If Margaito wins, he gets a large sum of money that is in the five figures; if he loses, he gets nothing, zip.

Pacquiao works on regaining speed

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines —Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao will focus on regaining his old speed in the final weeks of his training for his Nov. 13 title fight with Antonio Margarito in Arlington, Texas.

Roach said it won’t matter if Pacquio gives up a lot in size, four inches in height, six inches in reach and yes, a whole lot more in weight, as long as they flaunt the same power and speed on Nov. 13.

“Again, he’s (Margarito) bigger but size don’t win fights. Skill does,” said Roach entering the last four weeks of training.

Friendly Fire: Sparring partners Chavez, Khan, Vanes aim to gun Pacquiao down

$1,000 is a lot of money wherever you take it. Well, perhaps not in America where the recession is still in effect. But still, that's a month's worth of rent at a typical suburban apartment. You can buy yourself a fresh new pair of J's, the new NBA 2k11, some boxing gear, take your girl out to a fancy restaurant then catch Jo Koy at your local Improv and still have enough change left to buy your girl a Coach purse in case you get carried away with the comedy act and say something unwittingly offensive to her in an attempt to be funny. That's like 5 minutes at a Vegas slot machine for boxing writers like Mike Marley and Oliver Suarez. Okay, I'm going long on this, but the point is, Freddie Roach's $1,000 bounty for anybody that knocks his prized ward Manny Pacquiao down during sparring pales in comparison to the distinction of actually being the first person to do it.

Garcia can make his name with Margarito

The bell sounded to end the second round and Robert Garcia trudged across the ring to his corner. If the truth be known, he would have preferred to slip underneath the ropes and kept walking, all the way to the dressing room.

Garcia was a boxer, and a good one at that. On this night, Sept. 22, 2001, he was 26 years old. He began his career 32-0, but had entered this fight with John Trigg at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas 33-3, having lost three of his last four. A former International Boxing Federation junior lightweight champion, Garcia’s losses came to opponents who had a combined record of 70-1.

'We will prove everybody wrong on November 13'- Robert Garcia Interview

It is customary for true competitors to relish opportunities to go up against the best. Well, Antonio Margarito's trainer Roberto Garcia is no stranger to competition; He is after all a former World Super Featherweight Champion. Pacquiao Watch: The bigger they are the harder they fall

Mexico’s Antonio Margarito is priding himself as the bigger and stronger man when he fights the Philippine’s lone champion boxer-legislator in November.

He will enjoy a reach advantage of at least seven inches because of his height and at least five pounds when he bulks up after the weigh in.

Pacquiao is no stranger to fighting men bigger than he is. In fact, he is making a living out of it.

The guys he beat - Marco Antonio Barrera, David Diaz, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Angel Cotto and Joshua Clottey – were at least one weight division bigger than Manny’s natural fighting weight when he took the challenge of fighting them. Except for Clottey and Barrera in a rematch, all of them did not last the distance against the Filipino southpaw.

What many are forgetting though is that Margarito already has six losses on his record, three to journeymen from early on in his career, one each to Daniel Santos, Paul Williams, and Shane Mosley. So a loss to the fighter regarded by many as the best in the sport isn't going to damage his standing in the sport so long as he gives a good account of himself.

Apart from being busy preparing with his trainer Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California for the most important fight of his life on November 13 against Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito has also taken the role of being the benefactor to some young Olympic hopefuls' Olympic aspirations.
